Food Reward Friday

This week's lucky "winner"... the Cinnabon cinnamon roll!!!

The Cinnabon website boasts of "irresistible obsessions".  Make no mistake, this food is carefully crafted to exert the maximum possible influence on your reward circuits, reeling you in to purchase and consume.  Pastries are one of the most rewarding foods, due to the calorie-dense-combination of starch, sugar, and emulsified fat.  In this case, succumbing to temptation will cost you 880 Calories-- pretty hefty for a snack!

The texture may also play a role.  In his book The End of Overeating, former FDA commissioner David Kessler explains how certain doughy, easy-to-chew textures can increase our drive to eat.  It's not something that has received a lot of scientific research, but the food industry is well aware of it.

For those of you who don't live in the US, Cinnabon is ubiquitous in malls and other shopping areas, and its cinnamon aroma wafts into the noses of passers-by.

Thanks to WHS reader Paul Malan for the suggestion.

At least cinnamon buns are honest cheats. Nobody eats a cinnamon bun as a health food.
These (and Apple fritters) used to be favorites of mine. YUM!!! Yet there are many "Healthy" hyperpalatible meals/recipes that fool people into thinking that they are eating well. Here is a good example of a "healthy, natural" breakfast that is "Diabetes in sheep's-clothing."

Oatmeal, Walnuts, Apples and Raisins, what could be healthier? However, the author's post of nutrient values here are quite a bit off, especially the carbs. My evaluation of the macronutrient composition of this high carb breakfast is:
Calories=300, Carbs =50g; Fat=8g; Prot=6g. This meal will definitely spike your blood sugar.

You might as well eat a Pillsbury Cinnabon. It has almost the same macronutrient composition.
Calories=300, Carbs =54g; Fat=7g; Prot=5g.

Hey Stephan,
I don't mean to hijack, but is there a way to ask you for advice?

They should tax these like cigarettes.

Louis C.K. does a stand up skit on Cinnabon. I haven't decided if it is hilarious or sad. The general theme is that purchasers of these are sad obese men, eating them while reflecting on their poor decision and low self esteem.

Wow, that's just enormous!
I'm from Sweden, and here the typical cinnamon bun has about 250 - 350 calories, and many people make them themselves.

That's about how big they are here (compare to the coffee cup): https://cdn1.cdnme.se/cdn/9-2/455306/images/2009/p3280042-avnjuta-nybakad-bullekaffe-080328_26944649.jpg
