Are you drooling yet? The Garbage Plate is an American specialty that originated in Rochester, NY. It starts with a liberal helping of French fries and macaroni salad, topped with two hamburger patties or sausages, hot sauce, and a ground beef sauce over it all. I've never eaten a garbage plate, but they say a thick layer of fat congeals on the bottom of your plate before you're done eating. It is often consumed late at night in a drunken stupor.
Again, you have to admire the honesty here... you know exactly what you're getting yourself into.
This makes poutine look like a Weight Watchers meal...
ReplyDeleteUgh. The macaroni salad sounds like the worst addition. It appears there are some beans on the plate, too? That's a surprising addition.
ReplyDeleteI could probably enjoy a variation if it were just beef, sauteed potatoes, beans and hot sauce...but that's just nasty.
I'm not sure if this makes it better or worse, but the beans are cold when placed on the plate. Yes, I've eaten one, and it was in Rochester, at the place where this was invented (whose name I can't remember...)
ReplyDeleteWhat if you left out the mac salad, ate the beans, and cut the portion size in half? Would it be so bad, then?
ReplyDeleteAlso, if the fat drains and congeals at the bottom of the plate, that cuts down on the garbage factor.
If you eat this after a hard manual labor shift, I don't see the problem.
You should have a look at the Slinger.

I can confirm it's deliciousness, but it is very high reward.
I am disappointed that you failed to site the source. The garbage plate is from Nick Tahou's (in Rochester NY), as you can see if you look carefully at the rim of the fine china. The real bad news about the garbage plate is that it is supposed to be eaten at 3 am. If you don't screw up your bs levels, your circadian rhythms are sure to be trashed even better. You don't have to be drunk to eat it, but many are, as Nick's is still open after the bars close.
ReplyDeleteI should clarify--the actual version with the unnecessary mac salad and sausage looks nasty.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine ordering this in a restaurant, though. I don't pay for something I could easily duplicate at home, such as "big plate of random, mostly unhealthy foods."
looks awesome, like an east coast version of the Hawaiian Loco Moco.
ReplyDeleteI've had many a slinger in St. Louis, they are wonderful.
oh man ... if I eat eat that I'll need to avoid sparks & open flames
ReplyDeleteand society ...
Never mind your weight. The biggest problem with a genuine garbage plate from Nick's in Rochester is that if you let it into a car, the smell of the plate permeates the vehicle for weeks.
ReplyDeleteThis was a right-of-passage 3am drunk meal at college (RIT).
ReplyDeleteSo glad I am well passed that stage.
Like the others, I've enjoyed a Garbage Plate at Nick Tahou's in Rochester (U of R).
ReplyDeleteDang, it's good. Can't imagine even then eating one sober. ;)
Great find, Stephan!
This looks amazing. Consuming it after imbibing alcohol is truly foolish, however. I would also sub out the mac salad for some potato salad or maybe some egg salad. Squirt some fish oil into the salad and you got something that might pass for decent. Given certain other qualifiers, of course.
ReplyDeleteThink you finally found something I don't want to eat. Though last weeks burger looked questionable I don't think I would feel bad eating it. Potatoes and Macaroni, no thank you.
ReplyDelete@ICG, hard to believe, but this is the most popular place in town. It really looks like something you might concoct out of that stash in the basement that will go bad now that the world hasn't ended.

ReplyDeleteThat looks ridiculously unpalatable.
ReplyDeleteYes, not unlike the Loco Moco in Hawaii:

I had that once when I was living there and, not unlike a lot of local foods, sort of unexciting. Gotta say, these b-fast garbage plates aren't interesting enough for me to waste a bit of hedonism on.... I'd so much rather have pie. Or a burrito.
But I'm in CA so maybe that's the diff...
Nice interesting post for whole health source for readers.
