Starbucks and Taco Bell seem to be competing in a Funniest Pseudo-Ethnic Product Names contest. 410 calories. 180 from fat, 54 from protein, and 176 from carbohydrate. 52 grams of sugar. Probably on top of the breakfast you already had. But you can still feel good knowing it's just a cup of coffee.

Love this post! Most people don't even know just how many calories they are downing in one go...A highly palatable, highly rewarding food disguised as some innocuous, day-to-day drink...
I think people have some sense that they are sucking down a pile of calories, I just think they don't care.
What amazes me is when people get a blended drink *and* a pastry. Good lord.
99% of my Starbucks purchases are Americanos. Once in a *great* while, I will have a dessert. I can't eat any pastries there (gluten intolerance) so that has to be in the form of a coffee milkshake.
Yum!
My reward pathways are firing up just looking at the picture!
Is this only a tall? Many tend to order the grande or venti sizes.
Damn, I love this treat!
I used to drink these before I looked up how many calories they atually have. It's absolutely ridiculous and not filling at all. I could easily down one of these plus a pastry for a SNACK between lunch and dinner.
I've switched to unflavored lattes and americanos.
I've never had one of these sorts of drinks...do they offer much in the way of satiety? I suspect that they don't, but 400-something calories wouldn't be a big deal if it kept you full for a few hours.
Humans are weird animals. I don't honestly know of any other creature that eats and ambulates at the same time. Sure ungulates graze, but they aren't actually eating and going someplace at the same time.
All this eating and moving simultaneously is part of the general mindlessness that seems to be happening these days. Decades ago there were probably only two things a person could stroll and consume: an ice cream cone or an apple. Anything else would elicit hostile looks and comments from others.
Nowadays people get on a subway train, sit down, open a styrofoam container with their supper and start chowing down as if they were in their own diningroom. Well, I guess it's right up there with people yelling their personal life details into cellphones while on public transit during rush hour.
Starbucks is just another 'player' in the deconstruction of civil society.
I just gave my feral kitty 6 large cooked shrimps in her bowl. She picked them up and took them one at a time to the diningroom where she sat down and ate them in peace. Even a cat.....
Was just in Tokyo a couple weeks ago. Nobody walks around with food in hand there. Even with the abundance of Starbucks and lots of other food places, people do so much walking around, and not with food in hand, that they don't get fat. Some of this is genetics, true -- but in one week there, I lost three pounds.
wouldn't 52g of sugar make it at least 208 kcals from carbs?
I am very much fond of your blog.
what makes this pseudo-ethnically titled?
I like the Frappuccino - but I never mistook it for a coffee, I always saw it as a dessert or treat. It is a form of gelato. If you consider it as such - and preferably hold the cream - it's not THAT bad.
BTW: Being on the cheat day of my diet, I just had a monster burger with a 330 grams beef pattie, lots of french fries, an apple pie with whipped cream and vsnilla ice cream, a liter of lager beer, a white russian and a zombie. So maybe that biased my judgement. ;-)
"What makes this pseudo-ethnically titled?"
Frappuccino - not actually a genuine Italian word.
I'm not entirely immune to the sugary coffee drinks, but whenever I get a 16-oz. mocha at work, that is breakfast, not an addition to breakfast.
That being said, I'm skeptical of some of the calorie databases since most I've seen claim that a 16-oz. latte with no sugar has approx. 320 calories (in other words, 16 oz of whole milk). This is a blatant error immediately recognizable to anyone who has ever made one of these drinks, which would actually contain closer to 8 oz. of milk that has been doubled in volume by the steaming process. So, except in the case of some of the more mysterious Starbucks concoctions, I take the calorie fearmongering over my espresso drinks with a grain of salt.
I'm conscious about my diet, I've always been... but when it comes to coffee, I just can't control myself... I love drinking coffee and Starbucks has so many different kinds!
gr8!
