Food Reward Friday

This week's "winner"... the KFC Double Down sandwich!


This is basically a sandwich where the buns have been replaced by fried chicken.  You can't make this stuff up!  600 calories, 330 from low-quality fat (mostly fry oil, bacon, and "secret sauce"), and zero grams of dietary fiber, reflecting a complete absence of unrefined plant ingredients.  They sure do know how to fry some chicken in Kentucky.

Seriously though, even though the picture above isn't very appealing, fried chicken in general is hyper-rewarding for most people.  If I had a plate of it in front of me right now, it would be very hard for me not to overeat it.  Deep fried foods are the enemy of health, because they promote overeating, are high-heat cooked, and generally involve refined ingredients and low-quality oils.

I have these a couple times a year. Being diabetic I eat high fat and low carbs. I don't think it particularly healthy, but once in a while ......

If bacon is a low quality fat and eating it is wrong then I don't want to be right.

Most of Stephan's food rewards aren't in the dessert category, it seems to me. I'm not the slightest tempted by this. But I could eat an entire dessert cart.

I was always amazed observing the individual differences in the regard of personal optimal diet.
I experienced very positive results switching on a VLC diet from balanced one, free from any junk food, and I was always indifferent to sweets, except eating too much fruits.

While Diana could eat more carbohydrates than me as long as her choices are healthy and she limits fat, but she has a sweet tooth, and , probably, she got adopted better to carbs during her life-time consumption than me.

It could be like exercise, people who were engaged into exercise all their life and got adopted to physical activity, will get less benefits from walking around a block for 30 minutes a day than a person who had been sedentary.

Back when that came out I was intrigued at the basic ice of the thing, so I made a gourmet version using a single breast sliced in half, and it has chornichons, too.

Peter: Doesn't surprise me, as dairy products are loaded with hormones (various estrogens, DHT precursors, igf-1 etc). For a hormone-associated cancer, it makes sense.

The push for the consumption of "full fat dairy" baffles me.

Wow, that looks good. I'm going to make those, only with duck and no bread, and then I'm going to eat FOUR OF THEM. Then again, I'm the kind of girl who can down more than 3000 calories a day on a sedentary lifestyle and still be underweight. I guess it comes of avoiding the carby grainy nasty vegetable stuff.

The grilled version of this sandwich has only 460 calories. That's not a lot. You could eat like 5 of these a day and only be at 2300 calories. I would bet if a person at 5 of these a day, they would lose weight. But might jack up their cholesterol from the saturated fat and cholesterol in the sandwich. Just my 2 cents.

This is the best you could do? A single fast food sandwich with only 600 calories that's healthier than just about every other fast food sandwich in existence other than the grilled version of the very same menu item?

Manythings... isn't KFC built on the secret blend of herbs and spices? wonder if you can get it unseasoned...
